Understanding the NCLEX-RN Examination

The NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses) is the official licensing examination required to become a Registered Nurse (RN) in the United States and Canada. It is designed to determine whether a nursing graduate is prepared to begin practicing as an entry-level nurse safely and effectively.

The examination is developed and regulated by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Exam Format

The Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) is a computer-based test conducted at authorized Pearson VUE centers using a Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) system.

Computer-Based Test (CBT)

The NCLEX-RN is conducted entirely on a computer, where candidates read and answer questions on-screen in a secure testing environment.

Conducted at Pearson VUE Centers

The examination is administered at authorized Pearson VUE testing centers located worldwide, ensuring standardized and secure testing conditions.

Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) System

The exam uses a Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) format, meaning the difficulty level of each question adjusts based on the candidate’s previous answers to accurately measure competency.

Minimum of 85 Questions (Up to 150 Questions)

Candidates must answer at least 85 questions. Depending on performance, the exam may continue up to a maximum of 150 questions.

Maximum Time: 5 Hours

The total testing time allowed is up to 5 hours, which includes optional breaks.
